ViewpointYYC was a participatory project where I painted the favourite places of Calgarians. It was funded through an InvestYYC grant as part of Calgary Culture 2012.
A favourite subject and part of a long painting tradition--food makes for enduring images that are classic and nostalgic in the best way. Inspired by my grandmother's table and the bounty of our summers spent in the Okanagan valley, these paintings are either small enough to be held in your hand or larger than life.
A series of paintings done during a short artist residency through the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation. They are based on childhood birthday party photos, submitted to me through social media followers.
A participatory project where I used Facebook to collect submissions of summer vacation memories, creating original artworks and a series of postcards.
Recent explorations in illustration include beer labels, a series of Christmas cards and a children's book concept starring our cats.
My favourite subject, a still life says so much about the people who use the items and the context for when the paintings was made. I love the still life paintings of Cezanne, Manet, Morandi and Matisse and more recently, Hockney and Richard Diebenkorn. Ordinary objects and situations can become extraordinary as a painting. Two of these pieces were featured in Canadian House and Home magazine, thanks to clients with beautiful homes!
Inspired by the forest of the Northern Alberta landscape where I grew up, I began dabbling in painting trees. Most are very large (over 4 feet tall) and have been custom-painted for clients. Smaller still life studies of shells and bouquets of flowers explore light, shadow and colour relationships.
